Introducing Solids
Feeding solids can be a fun and exciting time for you and your baby – new tastes, textures and flavors. But it can also be a stressful (and potentially messy) situation. Here are some helpful tips to make a smooth transition.

  • At first, try solid foods for only one feeding each day. If your baby won’t eat it, try introducing it again in a few days.
  • Choose a time of day that is the least stressful for you, and a time when your baby is not too hungry. Many parents find mid-morning or mid-afternoon an ideal time.
  • Put a small amount of warm cereal on the tip of a rubber-coated spoon and place it in your baby’s mouth.

Don't be surprised if at first your baby spits out the food. He has been nursing, and his natural instinct is to use the same mouth and tongue movements, which is what causes some of the food to be pushed out of his mouth.  Don’t expect too much to be swallowed at first. Remember, starting solids is to help your baby make the transition from a totally liquid diet of breast milk or formula to the wide variety of foods your family eats, gradually forming the foundation to introducing your baby to foods that make up a well balanced diet.

When to Give More

  • Start with 4-5 tbsp. of breast milk or Similac® formula in a bowl with 1-2 tbsp. of Beech-Nut Rice Cereal. Gradually increase the amount of cereal, for a thicker consistency, as your baby becomes accustomed to eating from a spoon. You can offer two to three feedings a day.
  • When you're both ready, introduce him to single-ingredient foods like any Beech-Nut® Stage 1® jarred baby food.
  • After you've fed a variety of Beech-Nut Stage 1 single-ingredient foods and checked for allergies (introduce one new food at a time over a course of three to five days), he may be ready for more variety. Start to introduce simple combination foods like Beech-Nut Stage 2® Apples & Blueberries.
