Allergy FAQs

How soon would I see an allergic reaction?
Should I tell my doctor if food allergies run in my family?
What does an allergic reaction look like?
What kind of foods could cause an allergic reaction in my baby?

Q: How soon would I see an allergic reaction?
A: Symptoms of a reaction will most likely occur within 24 hours after exposure. Once your baby has displayed an allergic reaction to a particular food, do not reintroduce that particular food until, and if, your doctor says it's okay.

Q: Should I tell my doctor if food allergies run in my family?
A:
Yes, be sure to tell your doctor if there are any food allergies in your family. The information can be very helpful in planning your baby's diet.

Q: What does an allergic reaction look like?
A: Food allergy reactions vary greatly. Symptoms can include difficulty in breathing, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, skin rash, coughing, runny nose and watery eyes. If you see anything unusual in your baby when you add a new food, call your doctor immediately. Introducing just one new food every 3 to 5 days can help isolate the cause.

Q: What kind of foods could cause an allergic reaction in my baby?
A: The foods that most commonly cause allergies in babies are:

Raspberries, cranberries and blueberries have low allergic potential and are rarely the cause of allergy. Fresh strawberries can sometimes cause food reactions in babies. Cooked strawberries, on the other hand, usually do not. That's because heat pasteurization destroys the substance responsible for the reaction. So Beech-Nut® Stage 2® includes strawberries — pasteurized for safety and good tolerance — as one of our Stage 2 ingredients. Also note that all Beech-Nut cereals are soy free with the exception of our DHA plus+. Babies are generally ready for Stage 2 at about 6 months of age.

Some potentially high-allergen foods that are not usually fed to babies include fish, shellfish, peanuts and tree nuts. But remember that any food can cause an allergy. Check with your doctor if your baby shows any kind of reaction when you introduce a new food.
